Executive Director, Association of Nurses in AIDS Care (remote)

• ensure every nurse and other providers have the resources to serve people affected by HIV
• serve as a primary advisor and the nursing voice to key decision makers around HIV 

About ANAC

Founded in 1987, the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care (ANAC) is a global professional membership organization that supports nurses, nurse practitioners, and other health professionals who provide care to people living with or affected by HIV/AIDS.  ANAC serves its nearly 2,000 members and chapters through programs focused on connecting and educating its members while advocating for evidence-based approaches for the delivery of safe and effective HIV care. With the guiding principles of promoting the professional delivery of care to improve the health and well-being of people living with and affected by HIV, ANAC provides leadership, support, professional development, and programming to nurses and other health professionals in addressing the HIV/AIDS crisis by:

• Creating an effective, engaged network of nurses and other health professionals in HIV/AIDS care.
• Studying, researching, and exchanging information, experiences, and ideas leading to improved care and prevention.
• Providing leadership to the nursing and health professional community in matters related to HIV/AIDS and its co-morbidities.
• Advocating for effective public policies and quality care for people living with HIV; and promoting social awareness concerning issues related to HIV/AIDS.

ANAC meets the needs of nurses and other health professionals in HIV/AIDS care through its highly regarded peer-reviewed journal, robust member committees, local chapters, an annual conference featuring national and international speakers and educational and scientific sessions on the latest developments in HIV, and programs advancing HIV/AIDS care, research, prevention, administration, and policy.

About the ANAC Executive Director

ANAC’s executive director will be responsible for reporting to a 10-person Board of Directors to meet the organization’s mission and strategic goals, maintain fiscal stability, lead development and fundraising activities, provide member and chapter services, and oversee programs, conference, and policy initiatives. The ED will manage and grow ANAC’s $1.6 million annual operating budget and provide direction to the organization’s internal and outsourced team of 11 in operations, financial management, programming and constituent services.  ANAC’s Executive Director serves as a spokesperson for the association. Core responsibilities include:

Advocacy, Education, and Policy Development

• Ensures the participation of ANAC membership and leaders in national and international policy forums and within other nursing or healthcare organizations.
• Supports the development and engagement of ANAC membership in advocacy and other programming efforts as subject matter experts.
• Oversees the development of domestic and global programs to advance nursing education relative to HIV/AIDS treatment, prevention, and research.

Fundraising and Development

• Leads activities to identify and secure grant funding from diversified sources.  
• Cultivates and sustains a healthy donor base.

Strategic Leadership

• Develops and executes the organization’s strategic plan aligned with ANAC’s mission and long-term goals.
• Engages with stakeholders to assess the needs and challenges in HIV/AIDS care and develop relevant programs.

Fiscal Management

In conjunction with the ANAC Treasurer and Finance Committee, the ANAC ED:

• Manages the financial health and sustainability of the organization.
• Oversees and supports the development and implementation of fiscal and investment policies and guidelines.
• Makes recommendations to the Finance Committee for investment planning and decision-making.

In conjunction with the fractional CFO, the ANAC ED:

• Develops annual and program budgets and revenue projections.

• Manages resources and monitors monthly financial performance.
• Ensures financial transparency and timely reporting to the Board.

Leadership, Administrative and Human Resources Management 

• Provides strategic and operational direction to staff members in development, implementation, and operation of programs, events, communications, and membership development.
• Oversees the implementation of strategic and development plans.
• Recruits, hires, manages and develops paid staff, consultants, and volunteers.
• Identifies opportunities to utilize contractors and vendors and manages these engagements.
• Establishes and maintains organization policies and procedures. 

Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong awareness and understanding of current issues, trends, and policies in Nursing, HIV care/treatment/prevention, and Public Health, as well as proficiency in responding rapidly to dynamic trends and challenges.  The ANAC Executive Director should bring to this position demonstrated expertise in providing visionary leadership and the ability to create a workplace and organizational environment of efficiency, innovation, and creativity.   The ANAC ED will be expected to continually foster diversity and cultural competency in all operations and programming, as well as the capacity to foster transparency in all organizational processes.

Professional Requirements

• Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive leadership experience in Nursing, Public Health, or Nonprofit Management or related disciplines.
• Advanced (graduate) degree (or equivalent experience) in Nursing, Public Health, or Nonprofit Management or related discipline.
• Demonstrated success securing public and private grants and managing contracts.
• Prior experience managing budgets, P&Ls, and nonprofit finance.
• Experience working effectively with a nonprofit Board of Directors.
• Experience developing a strong culture and engaged team within a remote work environment.

Preferred:

• Registered Nurse or similar healthcare provider.
• Familiarity with, and membership in, comparable professional Nursing, Public Health, and/or HIV organizations.
• Knowledge of marketing and communications strategies used to build brand awareness, increase organizational visibility, and deliver effective messaging.
• Experience with HIV or other health care arena legislative/policy/advocacy, including demonstrated experience in writing and delivering governmental testimony, as well as familiarity with legislative processes.

Personal Characteristics

We are seeking a critical thinker with dynamic presentation skills. She/he/they will have exceptional interpersonal skills and will enjoy coaching individuals and organizations to increase capacity. The ideal candidate will have:

• Knowledge of the history and current issues facing HIV-affected individuals and communities.
• Superior written and oral communication and public speaking experience.
• Strong relationship-building skills including a track record of success in fostering collaboration and strengthening networks.
• An approachable, collaborative, and transparent leadership style.
• Belief in the societal benefits of diversity and inclusion, and a commitment to social justice.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple competing priorities with proficiency in meeting critical deadlines.
• Willingness to travel frequently (approximately 20%).

Salary is commensurate with the requirements of this full-time position and begins at $165,000.  The ED position is fully remote (EST is preferred) and manages a remote team, with a presence in Washington DC.  ANAC offers medical insurance and 403b retirement plans and generous vacation and paid leave.
